Letter from the Publisher
Brrrr! January offered unusually nippy weather here in Tampa Bay. Compared to the rest of the country though, sweater-wearing weather sure beats heavy parkas and icy streets any day. The return of “Valentine’s Day” on February 14 is a reminder of the importance of expressing heart-felt emotions for our most significant others. Hugs, cards and more are exchanged.
This month also represents time to focus on the physical state of heart health in our community and nation. During February - known as Heart Month - the American Heart Association (AMA) spearheads a nationwide educational campaign about heart disease and stroke. That includes this year’s 10th anniversary celebration of the AMA-sponsored National Wear Red Day®, this year on February 7.
It’s exciting to know that the natural health movement has assumed a leading role in efforts to raise awareness and make natural and holistic approaches to health accessible to all. This February issue of Natural Awakenings includes lots of insight in that respect. In “Rethinking Heart Health: Pioneering Doctors and Patients”, writer Linda Sechrist reveals cutting edge insights from key leaders in the natural heart health movement. In our Healing Ways feature, author Kathleen Barnes highlights “Simple Stress Busters: Natural Ways to Slide into a State of Calmness”. Our Natural Pet feature hones in on “Cardiac Care for Pets” by veterinarian and award-winning author Dr. Shawn Messonnier.
As always, open your mind, and read on. Debbey
