Make Your Own Organic Fertilizer ~ Feeding Food Scraps to Worms
Founded by Geographer and Worm
Farmer, Ana Maria Quintero, in 2014, Laica Worms & Vermicast strives to
empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds to cultivate mental well-being
and environmental stewardship while reducing the impact of food waste on
landfills. Offering one-on-one and group educational programs, they teach how
to: make a worm farm using a drill; feed and care for the worm farm; harvest
worm castings (organic fertilizer alternative) for use in your garden.
Worm castings—also called
vermicast—are the byproduct created by the Composting Red Wiggler Worms after
they digest the food scraps fed them. The castings are used as an organic
fertilizer alternative because they are high in nutrients, have high water holding
capacity, help suppress diseases, and improve soil texture and aeration, among
many other things.
